“A farm was never on our radar,” says Trina Mather-Simard, founder and CEO of Ottawa-based Indigenous Experiences. “But then I heard an interview and they were talking about Ojibwe Spirit Horses. Both my daughters are lifelong equestrians and we are Ojibwe. I was totally blown away that I had never heard of Ojibwe Spirit Horses.”
That was in 2020, in the midst of the COVID lockdowns. As soon as things opened up, Trina went to visit a herd in southwestern Ontario. “I called my team,” she says. “I’m like, you guys are going to kill me, but I might have just bought four horses.” At that time, Indigenous Experiences itself needed a home. Thanks to the horses, it would be a farm.
